emily:
hi! my name is emily north, i write a substack,
, where i yap and ramble about anything that is on my mind that week (there are often typos but that is all a part of the fun). i live in and love new york, i work at a corporate fashion job that makes me feel like i am living in a y2k rom-com in the best way. i just moved into an apartment where my bathtub is in my kitchen and madonna is usually playing in the background.hey angel cake!

★ gallery girls on amazon prime ★
so... i love bravo, i watch housewives, summer house, vanderpump rules, etc.. Clearly my amazon prime algorithm knows me better than myself because they recommended i start the long lost (since cancelled) bravo show, gallery girls. it follows the lives of seven "downtown aspiring gallerinas" in 2012 trying to ~make it~ in the big city. it is a perfect show. there is so much bad art and delusion and privilege and stupid fights and cheap wine at gallery shows and shitty boyfriends. it's a perfect time capsule to an extremely weird moment of culture. god, i wish i could rewatch for the first time.
for the record, if anyone ever makes you feel bad for loving reality tv, they are extremely short sighted and falsely pretentious- it is the best example of cultural anthropology we have!!!! curious, smart, hot, cool people watch reality tv.
★ emma roberts’ architectural digest ★
i don't know why i am so strangely endeared by emma roberts but i am. i love that she has that fake book company, i love the way she wears her clothes, i love that she is kind of self aware but also incredibly out of touch at the same time. i devoured every second of her architectural digest- THE DOLL COLLECTION!!!!!!!!!!
★ the everyoutfit of sex and the city instagram AND podcast ★
i grew up watching sex and the city at an extremely young age (if you know me... this explains a lot), i have watched every episode at least 10x, i first discovered the every outfit of sex and the city instagram account around 4 years ago and was hooked by their captions. satc is an interesting show because there is a large subsect of the fanbase that values the quick and niche dialog, cultural touchpoints of new york and the incredible styling of patricia fields. then there is another subsect that glamorizes carrie bradshaw and manolos and cosmopolitans and probably has a gold cursive plaque that says "i wanted to let you know that im getting married. to myself. and i'm registered at manolo blahnik". every outfit of sex and the city celebrates the first kind of satc fan which i love. their podcast is even better because it extends their universe to movies and fashion (i am in fact a patreon subscriber).
★ amazon smart light bulbs ★
so this might be an offline recommendation but its linked to my phone so i am considering it online- i recently bought a new lamp and needed the perfect soft light bulb so i can avoid using the abrasive overhead light in my apartment, i bought one of those amazon smart light bulbs and was skeptical but i have been converted. you can change it to any color (soft white, orange, red, soft pink..) and DIM IT from your phone. that's SO CRAZY TO ME! they are also pretty affordable. game changing. i love living in 2024.

☆ fresca ☆
i am ashamed to admit that i love expensive bodega/convenience store beverages- poppi, recess, spindrift... if they're more than $5 a can, i want it. i also have an extremely hard time drinking water, which for the record i do not find quirky i find it embarrassing but i just can't DO IT! i used to drink fresca growing up only 1 week of the year when my extended family would all go to the beach together and it would be available at the local supermarket down there. fresca always seemed too good to be true, it's so flavorful and refreshing and perfect. i stumbled upon a can when i was feigning for a raspberry rose poppi at the new bodega near me and immediately grabbed it. i took a sip on a sidewalk on a particularly sticky summer day and it was just as good as i remembered and is half the price of any of those stupid direct-to-consumer drinks. i also imagine it would also be delicious in a cocktail. ☆ seeing movies alone ☆
one of my favorite things in the whole entire world is seeing a movie alone. lately i have been trying to protect the individuality of my thoughts and not be so quick to be influenced by others, i find that when i watch movies with other people the discussion around it (which i do love) will always influence my perspective. there is a lot of power in massaging out an idea and letting a movie sit with you before immediately discussing it with another person. my routine usually involves some sort of sweatpant outfit (sometimes i add a sequin bag or something just for fun), i always buy a large diet coke + twizzlers and am transported to a heavenly state.
☆ elizabeth street garden ☆
so literally everyone in new york knows about elizabeth street garden, it is FAR from a "hidden gem" but it is an extremely special place for me, i have seen the most beautiful displays of human connectedness there (an engagement, a poetry reading, birthday picnics, first dates). i've been thinking about the garden a lot because it is at risk of being torn down by the city- it would be extremely hot and cool if you donated/wrote a letter/volunteered to help save it... it is too beautiful to lose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ciao!
thank you for having me ❤️
