#59: coquette world domination, the mia thermopolis effect TM & sink girl
sent from martina's iphone with love
martina:
Hello!!
My name is Martina Calvi (oddly also known as Martina Martian ((did you know you can't change your username once you've been verified? I wish someone at Instagram HQ would have mentioned that 5 years ago, but here we are)).
I have been on the internet sharing my creative projects for almost a decade, which is wild. I have called myself many things (illustrator, designer, photographer) and these days, a full time creator.
I think all creatives are secretly just big soft sentimentalists. I am unfashionably positive and rose-tinted in my view of the world. I love writing and the fact that my boyfriend thinks I'm funny. I spend most of my days crafting and running my business.
You can visit my Instagram and get the general idea: @martinamartian (ugh, that username, again).
With that being said, here's what I'm in love with lately! And thank you sweet Joss for having me here <3
our creative fairy godmother is here!
this is the online bit:
Sink Girl
I am engrossed in, obsessed with this messy makeup trend on Tiktok.
We are all guilty of a filthy makeup bag, or a messy vanity, or maybe even an entire drawer full of half or unused gifted cosmetics (apologies to my PR girls reading this) - which is why it's so enticing to see other people's messy habits.
But this is a whole other level of ‘girl mess’. I can't look away.

If you don't know about this by now, let me catch you up:
Emerging out of the romanticisation of early 2000's romcoms and teen culture online, is the art of 'clustering'.
Collecting odd little trinkets and curating them in artful clusters like modern day cabinets of curiosities. You see it in every early 2000's romcom, and you saw it in your older sister’s bedroom growing up. It's beautiful.
Thank God for Sofia Coppola and Adrienne Salinger for immortalising this art form for generations to be inspired by.
I love my trinkets, I love girls who love their trinkets, I love that this actually has a name now (coined by Avery-Claire @avnugs).
Coquette World Domination:
As an active participant and contributor to the bow trend, I know we have taken it too far (see: bow butter).
What's more fascinating is that we are AWARE we are taking the bow trend too far. If you get it, you get it.
This video takes the cake:
There's definitely deeper levels to the idea of coquettifying the gym and traditionally masc spaces, but I'm not getting into that now. It's just bows. It's stupid, and it's the internet.
(I hope Sandy Liang will be okay).
this is the irl bit:
The Mia Thermopolis Effect TM
I recently splurged on a super bouncy 90’s blow-out, and someone compared it to Mia Thermopolis' makeover in the Princess Diaries (I have curly hair).
Backhanded, but apt.
I sat there with sky-high rollers in my hair and a wine in hand on a Wednesday and walked out feeling like a New York princess.
HIGHLY recommend.
Library Cards
I'm writing this from my local library and all I can tell you is that renewing my library card has changed my life.
2023 has been crowned the year of booktok and as a result, books are becoming like fast fashion items- are we actually reading Good Material or just putting it on our story and watching Tiktokers (like me) talk about it?
If we are going to be consuming this many books, we may as well get a library card.
You'll feel less guilty if you don't get through the first chapter, and you'll save your money to support the books you actually cherish and care about.
"The Great Outdoors"
Hating camping is boring.
It is bloody wonderful to be outside and sleep under the stars and hear the ocean or a running creek nearby.
The conversations you have with people around a campfire are either the silliest or deepest of your life. It is an ancient human experience. It's good for our brains.
I'm sorry, but it needs to be said!
Thanks for reading!!
ciao!
