can a man and a woman really just be friends? a wedding made me ask again, the guardian
i’m a little soppy sap for friendship things. this made me go waaaaah like a big baby. literally just thinking about my friends makes me go waaaah like a big baby these days. ily youse (still have the disease where i can’t be earnest without making a dumb joke lol so i guess i haven’t grown up that much).
Aristotle saw friends as mirrors for each other, shared souls dwelling in two bodies, and Epicurus wrote that true friendship is a blessing unlike any other in life. “In its broadest sense, in the eyes of the ancients, friendship was the principle that held together society, and even the universe,” according to Arnaud Suspène, a professor of ancient history at the Université d’Orléans.
With the advent of Romantic-era thought and industrial capitalism, though, society prioritised the nuclear family above the “village”, and focused on romantic coupledom as the pinnacle of what might exist between two people. What is the combined weight of all the literature and lyrics, performance and paint, melody and monument, devoted to romantic relationships? How much, in comparison, to friendship?
the future of digital creativity, the digital fairy
i feel like my mind wasn’t ~blown~ by this report, but regardless it was a nice reminder/clarifier for things i’ve seen recently. also a nice reminder that you don’t have to literally invent something new to be creative.
here were my key takeaways:
Creativity is under construction — originality is evolving to reflect remix culture, social media has smashed barriers to success but created new pressures, and there’s a new class of creativepreneurs (atrocious portmanteau) that values community over clout.
We have reached ‘peak content’, our daily lives are oversaturated with visual stimulus and references, making creative output as much about reproduction as originality.
Social media has democratised creativity. Anyone can self-publish or build a personal brand; going from unknown to a viral sensation overnight — surpassing institutional gatekeeping that previously dictated creative success.
i started the new year shrouded in the painful afterglow of a hangover, eating nandos with my hands and crying whilst watching call me by your name. a true day 1 of 365 moment <3
when i thought it couldn’t get any grimmer- i was proven correct. my day took an immediate uptick when i started to binge the curse, nathan fielder’s new show. in true fielder-esque style, the show trades in themes of awkwardness, reality bending and the meta meta, but in a way where it all felt new and original. i feel like i missed some crucial earlier parts because of the whole two brain cells thing but it’s still so good. today i’ve been able to put on underpants so i think i’ll be able to pick up on so much more. emma stone is perfect. i can’t wait to watch the rest tonight.

leeks
leeks not leaks. spelling is important sometimes. either leeks don’t get the airtime they deserve or it’s only me that’s been sleeping on them. every time i eat one i’m like damn that’s literally so delicious and feel kinda guilty for not paying attention this whole time.
how to have sex
ryan and i watched this in cinema and we were both spellbound. it’s just soooo good. made us feel sick, but like in a good way. it’s one of those films where you feel like you need a shower afterwards. you can still smell the vanilla body spray, hair sticky from club sweat, can still feel the awful cheap polyester dress cutting you up uncomfortably. i want to write more about it but i’m feeling pretty dumb dumb still. hope you understand.

god this is good. Leeks are so good and no one talks about them.
