aurelia:
Hi! My name is Aurelia and I’m a comedian, writer, podcaster and mother to a dog who has an Instagram account I run. I’m an avid subscriber of Joss’ substack and felt like an imposter when she asked me to be a guest. It took me months to write this because I was plagued by writer’s block and felt like I didn’t deserve to enjoy life. Last week a friend gave us some mushrooms which reset that way of thinking a little so here I am, with some recommendations you’ll hopefully enjoy as much as I do in my newfound love for life <3
everyone say heyyyyy aurelia!
this is the online bit:
★ Frank Ocean Cello Covers on YouTube ★
Before Spotify, I used to discover new music on YouTube. Now I use YouTube to find different versions of old music like this Frank Ocean Cello Cover (sorry to call Frank Ocean old music but you know what I mean? WHERE IS THE NEW ALBUM FRANK). I also love slowed-down reverb mixes like this one. Ideal listening for a relaxed evening at home.
★ Using Notion for to-do lists ★
I’ve struggled with time management for as long as I can remember. I used to do homework on the bus to school and still struggle to meet the deadlines I set for myself. Notion helps me break tasks down into smaller portions and it’s so satisfying ticking things off my little lists (replying to Joss for this newsletter was one of them).
★ Pinterest ★
When I want to reduce my Instagram screen time, I open Pinterest. It gives me the dopamine hit of seeing pretty images with less subliminal advertising and FOMO because there are no stories of people I know hanging out without me. As a former tumblr girlie, I just like looking at pretty images tbh. Some man once said “everything you can imagine is real” and my version of that is “everything I can imagine is on a Pinterest board”.
this is the irl bit
☆ Bahn Mi ☆
In a world full of over-hyped and over-priced sandwiches, be a delicious Bahn Mi. In Melbourne, it’s not uncommon to spend $18 for a toastie that’s best described as mid, but in Richmond and Footscray, the suburb where I used to live, and the one I live in now, you can find a Bahn Mi for $10 or less. There’s a rivalry between To’s and Nhu Lan in Footscray, but my favourite is Nhu Ngoc at the Footscray Market Food Court. Try a tiger roll with pate if you don’t feel like having a smaller snack.
☆ Op Shops ☆
I get withdrawals when I don’t visit my local Savers store at least once a week. Walking through the homewares section stoned, listening to a podcast and contemplating whether or not to buy another quirky mug is one of my favourite pastimes. I’ve found some of my favourite perfectly worn-in vintage tees at op shops and love to look through the seemingly endless racks of clothing and shelves full of bric-a-brac. It’s like scrolling on my phone but IRL.
☆ Cheaper Buy Miles ☆
Cheaper Buy Miles is a bargain hunter’s paradise. This Melbourne institution has outlets in four suburbs and sells semi-expired groceries at heavily discounted prices. I’m talking 3 bars of Tony’s Chocolonely’s for $10 (usually almost $10 a bar), $4 truffle oil and stuff like Vegan Mayo, Cinamon Toast Crunch and Italian Biscotti. My usual Footscray CBD walk includes a Bahn Mi, a trip to Savers and I finish at Cheaper Buy Miles to see what’s new on their shelves.
