Abbey, 25, 5”4, blue eyes, blonde (adjacent), master of none, culinary fan girl, and insufferable most of the time. I have job hopped my way through my last 7 years of life but finally hopped my way to an ADHD diagnosis (who would’ve guessed it).
My friends describe me as one of the most terrifying and equal parts wonderful people you will ever meet. I am truly fascinated by how everything and everyone is connected. This could be by their first hospitality gig, their housemates, the way they drink their martini, their favourite type of bread and the sheets that line their bed. It is obscure and sometimes hard for people to understand, It is also how I create emotional connections, analyse someone and remember them. I am tenacious and remember mostly everything about everything. I remember people by what they wear, their occupation and their dietary requirements, everything other than their name, their name comes last and sometimes is the least important.
My favourite TV show is Rake with Richard Roxburgh, my top song on Spotify wrapped 2022 was “Great Balls of Fire” sung by Miles Teller from Top Gun and I love Stanley Tucci. Priscilla Queen of Desert is my favourite movie and I book flights based on it being available for viewing. Missy Higgins’s Sound of White is my car album and track 3 is what I play when they speak in between songs on the radio. I auditioned for mini masterchef in 2010 and I can play the French Horn, the Cello and every type of recorder.
masterchef!
Here are my current hyperfixations both online and in real life:
this is the online bit:
Facebook Marketplace
Facebook marketplace, not a unique online recommendation, more so a cesspit of mid century modern.. Hey, is this still available? Are you flirting with me? Cash only? please I’ll pay extra! Some people my age go to festivals to execute the following and brag about it, but I am not like other people, I’ve got another kind of shelving problem. Niklas? Mid century modern? Enetri? Chrome? Modular? The main thing is, will they fit? Will they fit in my blue Mazda 2? Some people travel for love, I travel for my shelves. Most namely to Woy Woy, for my first. Everyone remembers their first. My first Niklas Chrome Vintage Ikea shelves from the 80s. This obsession stemmed from my good friends Harry and Jason, I blame them completely for this hyperfixation.
Not my exact shelves, but close enough
WhatsApp, used by Europeans and those who are living in Sydney's version of it, Darlinghurst. My cul-de-sac and its surroundings are all closely connected not only by proximity but by this wonderful vehicle of the modern age; WhatsApp. I am at the known pulse of this sometimes sunny city, and having a close-knit community of eyes and ears has its perks. CCTV on demand, agents against Parking Ticket Inspectors, Clover Moore updates, a plethora of dog sitting jobs, happy hours and Una’s latest price increase. Nothing is out of bounds for this chat and the sense of community and pride I feel from it is unmatched.
Like most things within the cultural zeitgeist, I seem to think I did it first. X, formerly known as Twitter used to be so much more than a place to post hot selfies, your nudes and even hotter takes. Picture this, it is 2012 soon after the debut of One Direction’s ‘What Makes You Beautiful,’ there was another integral launch, The launch of my first twitter account. I had many rebrands during these very age-affirming years, hopping from one direction member to the other. (and finding them and meeting them all irl too). Between tracking Justin Bieber's private flight on FlightAware before it was cool and checking in Ed Sheeran’s security guard at the self check in at Qantas (I know now this is illegal) to find out what time he was leaving the state, there was nothing i wouldn’t do to get in touch with the stars. I believe my tenacity and persistence flourished from these days and gave me lifelong (sometimes scary) skills that have served me well.
Something I wish I could put on my resume
this is the irl bit:
The Wayside Chapel Kings Cross op shop
I have not online shopped in maybe 4 years (unless you count my girl Ali, Ali Express). There’s no point having a walk-in wardrobe room bigger than my bedroom than to not have it full of garments. The Wayside Chapel Kings Cross op shop has gifted and served me with some of my most prized possessions. My matching Issey Miyake pantsuit, my orange Tod’s leather handbag from New York and everything sourced from their $5 rack. Don’t worry, no need to gate-keep, I’ll get to them first.
Foraging like my ancestors
If it’s forcing my friends to drive through Darling Point council pick ups to find the perfect dining room table, it’s simply something we must do. I believe it is in my primal instincts, it’s innate to hunt and gather including sourcing floral arrangements, and other roadside treasures. If not always for me, for those around me, even if unsolicited. My love for the Wayside and Facebook Marketplace also encompass this irl recommendation.
Thank you darling point residents who chucked this beauty out, she even folds up
Come Dine With Me
I have been Sydney sober since my 25th Birthday and instead of the dance floor I have found myself in my 1 x 1m2 kitchen. The art of hosting and staying in has been made even easier after my oven caught alight and got replaced and my new housemate doubled our fridge space. I am a lover of fridge pasta and recently introduced a fridge pie to my repertoire. Anchovies on toast and a baked good are also two non-negotiables. Be sure to make a booking!
Ciao for now, you know where to find me @anchoviesontoastt
